How studying in Italy works

Bachelor's degrees usually take three years. Master's degrees usually take two years, and some private universities also offer intensive one-year master's programs. The academic year usually starts in September or October.

Entry requirements

For a bachelor's degree you need your secondary school diploma and transcripts; for a master's, a bachelor's degree. Universities also ask for proof of English (for example IELTS or TOEFL), a CV and a motivation letter, and some hold an interview or admission test. Your documents may also need official recognition, such as a Declaration of Value or a CIMEA statement.

Student visa

Students from outside the EU pre-enrol through the Universitaly portal and then apply for a national (type D) study visa. You need your admission letter, proof that you can support yourself, health insurance and accommodation. Within eight days of arriving in Italy you apply for a residence permit for study.

Costs

Tuition at private universities is usually around €12,000 a year, depending on the university and the program. Living costs depend on the city, and we give you a clear estimate for every option on your shortlist.

Working while you study

International students can work part-time, up to 20 hours a week, during their studies.
